Otto Warmbier, el joven estudiante estadounidense arrestado en Corea el Norte en 2016, y que fue liberado este martes por el régimen de Kim Jong-un, está en coma desde hace un año tras haber contraído botulismo, informó el Washington Post.
Sus padres fueron informados por funcionarios de Corea del Norte a través de enviados estadounidenses sobre el estado de su hijo, que llegará a Cincinnati por la noches del martes con el carácter de una evacuación médica.
“Nuestro hijo está viniendo a casa. Por el momento, estamos tratando como que estuvo en un accidente”, dijo Fred Warmbier al Washington Post.
Según los norcoreanos, Otto, quien pasó 17 meses en cautiverio, contrajo botulismo en algún momento luego de su condena en marzo y entró en coma luego de tomar una pastilla para dormir.
Su liberación fue anunciada más temprano el martes por el secretario de Estado de los Estados Unidos, Rex Tillerson, y en medio de una visita del ex jugador de la NBA Dennis Rodman, amigo personal del líder supremo, al país.
Pero Tillerson no dijo en ningún momento que el joven se encontraba en un estado delicado de su salud ni que su evacuación sería médica.
Warmbier es un estudiante de 22 años en la Universidad de Virginia que fue arrestado en enero de 2016 durante un viaje de estudios al hermético país comunista.
